Talk about your teamNarrative has always been central to how I think about our Executive Briefing Center. It shaped how we designed the space and how we wanted senior visitors to experience it. What I wanted from Spencer was help threading that narrative through the whole executive journey, so that the tour, the conversations in between, and the presentations themselves work as one continuous story rather than three separate moments.
Over two days he gave us the frameworks and the shared language to design our work that way, treating every executive visit as a story with the visitor as the protagonist. One shift the team is excited about is what Spencer calls ‘Conversational Presenting’: the deck becomes a flexible asset that supports the conversation in the room rather than driving it. Given that these are some of the most expensive conversations any company with an EBC has with its customers, the return on getting them right is significant.
Few EBC programs invest in narrative as a discipline at this level, and the difference is already showing in how our team is redesigning upcoming visits. For any EBC leader who wants the full executive experience, including the deck, to land as one coherent story, I would recommend him without hesitation.
In an Executive Briefing, you never know for certain what the customer wants to hear or how much time you will have on the agenda until it happens. Discussion Leaders need to learn how to be flexible and get their message across while keeping the customer’s interest at the forefront.
Knowing your key message before presenting. If you know your north star message, you can deliver it in 10 minutes or deepen the conversation to 45 minutes. Conversation is the key word there, because we learned you shouldn’t plan to present slides for 45 minutes, but rather ask questions and see where the customer wants to take the conversation within the content you have. I think this goes against how we’re traditionally taught to present, so it was a new way of thinking.
Flexing on demand is one of the most important skills for a Discussion Leader in the EBC and conversational presenting can help with this. Spencer took a real presentation that our Discussion Leaders often present and put theory into practice, showing them how they can use a conversational way of presenting in the Executive Briefing Center to meet the time and objectives of the session.
